Yes and no....yes its still possible to get a virus on a machine running an anti-virus program....but for that specific program to be infected, no. Viruses attack the machine and can go about it several ways, including but not limited to, deleting program files or rendering them useless, which could be one of the anti-virus program files or just about anything else. You can run an on line scan to see if anything shows up, as it is never a good idea to run 2 anti-virus programs on the same computer, they often conflict with each other, an on line scan isn't going to install any programs just an active x to allow it to scan the PC.

If it does find something they usually will either prompt you to buy their program (that's part of the "free" scan part) or give you advice on what to do.

Easiest solution is to format the hard drive and start over from scratch.
Yes, why not? After-all it is also a software.... Your anti-virus software can protect it if some files get infected. Viruses can mainly infecte file-types such as .exe, .com. So all software have .exe or .com files and there are all possibilities that they can get infected.
I don't think so. Don't run 2 Anti-virus.
Install 2 antiviruses
Yes - it will get affected.

Connect you HDD as a secondary drive in a clean system with proper antivirus software (with updated virus def) and run a full scan without omitting any directories.

Alternately you can do online scans - but slower and still has the risk of infections.
