There are many out there.
If you want to pay for it id say:
1. Mcafee
2. Trendmicro
3. kaspersky antivirus
If you want it free:
1. AVG
2. AntiVir
3. Avast
I tend not to go toward Norton since
it hogs a lot of memory and is bulky
other then that its also pretty good

I've been using AVG that I downloaded from
the PC Magazine website(free) and
it has worked pretty well so far!
I see this question allot.
The simple answer is there is no best out there. Not any one of them is going to protect you from everything. I have seen infected machines with most all anti viruses. I say most because I'm not sure I heard of all of them yet.
All of them do a fair job. Some are most CPU intense than others.
What is important is how you use your computer. If your going to open every e mail you get, click every link you see and download what looks like free stuff all the time. You will get infected eventually. Almost no question about it.
Choose an anti virus ( my choice is Nod32) and if it doesn't come with an firewall get one of those installed also. There are also nice free software firewalls out there also.
