If the updates expired ie finished then it is as good as useless because there are lots of new viruses put out on the internet every day and the anti virus data base needs to be updated to keep up with them.

Norton is bloatware it uses up too much from the PC's resources (cpu and memory) you are better off with avg or avast both of which are free. Kaspersky and NOD32 are very good but not free.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. I have a brand new Sony Vaio laptop, and I'm working on customizing it. It's sleek and awesome. Vista runs very well on it, and minus a few incompatibilities, it works awesome.

I've found Avast's boot-time scan to be a very effective method of virus removal and have used Avast to remove viruses on systems that couldn't be removed by other AV programs. Once a virus loads itself on your system and is running it can take several defensive measures to prevent AV software from removing it. The boot-time scan can perform a scan while Windows is still in the process of booting up, before any programs or services are loaded, including viruses. Plus is supports virus scanning for email and IM, but the boot-scan is what gives Avast a huge advantage over other AV programs, including the expensive ones like Norton and McAfee. I've found a combination of Avast for anti-virus, Windows Defender (which is a free download from Microsoft) for Adware/Spyware removal and switching to Firefox to be an effective solution to control virus and adware problems, plus it's totally free. Ad-Aware SE Personal is good for adware/spyware removal also, and a good alternative to Windows Defender if you a version of Windows other than XP or if you don't have a "genuine" copy of XP.

Sorry to hear you're using Windows and need to get anti-virus sticking plasters.

If your Kaspersky database is outdated, you fix it by updating the database with the latest information. As there are hundreds of new infections for Windows every day, you need to update at least daily.
Kaspersky? that's not a too good antivirus. I recommend u Avira (is free no key reqired) www.free-av.com, but if u want to solve your problem verify if:

- Your internet connection is opened fo updating

- Your registration serial number is correctly written

- Update style is not configured through proxy servers

AVG has poor detection rates. The free version does not come with the ewido engine that is part of the pro version. it doesn't shape up well against other free products, and should be avoided if you want to the best protection for your machine.

Kaspersky. You cant beat it. It catches EVERYTHING. Norton and others update about once every two days. Kaspersky updates almost hourly. It runs on a very low amount of RAM and you would never know when it is scanning the computer because it doesnt hog up a lot of memory. Seriously. Look it up. 5 star ratings across the board. I wouldnt trust any of my computers without it.

that said, i used to work for McAfee, so guess what i would recommend, though i can only recommend the "corporate"-version, not sure about the "home"-version. i use AVG myself, and rather pleased with that. i have also worked for Symantec/Norton, but i can _not_ recommend them. they use far too much system-resources. you want to be protected, but not in a cocoon... well. i don't.

i also use common sense. that helps.

Zone Alarm is a strong firewall. It has 3 levels of protection. Incoming, outgoing and internal. Internal is great because if something gets by, it will alert you to "suspicious" activity in your computer. ZA also provide instant messenger protection against IM worms and Trojans.
I totally agree with the first post, if those are the options your giving, Go with AVG and Microsofts free antispyware. McAfee has over bloated there security sweet and it takes FOREVER to tweak so that it doesnt stop you from doing what you want to with your PC online (gaming, internet, email, network file sharing, etc...)

ZoneAlarm is another product that just brings PCs to a crawl because of its overachieviing security settings and inefficient system processes it runs.

I would suggest AVG Pro which you can buy online, you get 2 years for the price of the other one. (anti virus protection only) it's not a security suite
First i used Norton 2005, but eventually, i understood that norton is taking so much memory for loading and scanning.

Later, i changed to AVG. But it was only good in detecting and not in healing the virus.

Finally i got this Avast Home Edition and it is the best anti-virus i have ever seen. it is only taking less memory and also it is detecting and killing the virus.

I would surely recommend Avast.

Cant delete AVG Anti-Virus. Access denied in admin?!?

I tried a simple uninstall %26 delete of AVG;

At XP startup it tells me that my licence has run out (it has but i dont intend to renew it) so i:

- ran setup.exe -%26gt; Uninstall program -%26gt; apparantly successful but a restart tells me the licence still needs renewing

- Remove Items in Ctrl Panel -%26gt; it went to same setup.exe prog, same result

- tried deleteing the whole AVG folder -%26gt; Access Denied, some exe %26 dll files are apparantly write protected or in use (in admin)

- stopped avg processes in task manager

- try first 3 again, no progress

- restart in safe mode, try first 4 again. AVG was not visible in ctrl panel and processes not running, however i still cant delete the folder (access still denied or in use)

- deleted grisoft and avg folders from docs%26settings/allusers

- try first 3 again, no progress

- update 7.1-%26gt;7.5 (DLoad-%26gt;AVG site) -%26gt;retry all the above

- used regedit to delete AVG from ctrl panel -%26gt; removed from ctrl panel but cant delete, access denied. Any other ideas?

I had AVG for pay antivirus, and it expired due to non payment. Then I simply downloaded AVG free and AVG for pay is now gone.
Are you restarting? Try a search for all 'AVG' files (including hidden). Go to the CONTROL PANEL/FOLDER OPTIONS. Make sure there is a check mark in SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS.

I'm using Win98 and the following software programs (with Publisher's Descriptions) are the ones I use and recommend, but you should go to download.com and read the user reviews before making any decisions. As far as anti-spyware is concerned, I use Webroot's Spy Sweeper (http://www.webroot.com) and it has been excellent so far. For a free anti-spyware try ewido (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/... I can't vouch for ewido anti-spyware because I haven't used it, but since it's on Grisoft's website, I'd trust it based on experience.

However, the best defense against virus, spyware, and/or malware is still education and being careful of your surfing habits.

When updating/installing the new virus pattern to my anti-virus can i delete the old virus pattern?

While I have absolutely NO idea why, I suppose you can. Check the vendors website or the included help files for the folder the virus files are stored in and delete it.

Here's the thing: when you update it's just that-an update. It just appends new definition to the list. If you delete the original it'll probably give you an error. At best when you update again, you'll get a honking big file as your AV will re-download and re-install the old definitions. At worst (probably-if it starts at all) you will only have the protection provided by the new list, the old list will be gone.

If you downloaded the complete list with new additions every time the file would be huge, and it would get bigger with every download. Example: You have a list of things on paper, say pages 1-10 and it's time to add 11-20 how do you want to do it? Type up 20 pages or just type up the new 10 as pages 11-20 and add them to the stack? Muuuuuuch simpler just to add to the list rather than redo the whole thing every time.

I had a similar problem with Norton. I downloaded my renewal, and the file was corrupt. I had to uninstall the file, then I went with Macafee. I like MacaFee much better.

Make sure the file on yours is not corrupt.

I use Avast and have no problems. Avast and AVG are coming into favor lately. They both work very well, are much easier on your system (not much draw of system resources), and best of all, they are free.

I'd recommend you download SpyBot, and run a system sweep with it. SpyBot is a spyware detection tool, and is also free. Just download it, run an update on it to verify you have all of the current detection rules, and run a scan. Simple as that. I run a system scan about once a week, and have no problems as a result.

Oh. I got that internet thing once. Run a virus scan and your anti-virus program should find it. If you're still concerned, remember that you can have multiple anti-virus/anti-adware programs on your computer at once without any negative consequences, so that's an option as well.

You have unused registry entries. You should probably download a registry cleanup tool. I use HS Clean disk Pro. Just type these words into your address bar or search box; "Registry Cleaner" Then look for a free trial version. You could type "HS Clean disk Pro" into the same search box. When I got my copy they were offering a 30 day free trial.

After running a registry cleanup tool you should search your hard drive for files related to the Norton program. (i.e. Symantec) ISince it isn't properly installed in the first place it wont hurt anything to delete the files related to an old program. You WILL NOT be able to reinstall Norton when a partial or damaged version remains on your hard drive.

I had this happen to me once with an old version of Norton prior to getting my copy of HS Clean Disk Pro. It wouldn't let me remove it because it wasn't all there. And it wouldn't let me reinstall it because it hadn't been removed. I had to reinstall my operating system. This might be your only option.

I switched my computer on this morning and the following occured. Norton system icon started flashing red, warning that the system was corrupt and needs immediate attention. The original error message was probably a trojan, and you downloaded a 'tool' that has trashed your system.

It is still on your machine and preventing you from re-installing Norton. I'm not sure if you'll be able to recover anything safely from this; the easiest route will be a reformat, shred the hard drive, and reinstall Windows from scratch. If you can download and install any other security software then try running it in Safe Mode.And in future, never click on one of these links. All have weaknesses. AVG = free though.
When I first purchased my PC a year ago it came with Norton already installed, but it was only for a trial period of time and Norton is excellent, but when I signed on with my ISP, I got McAfee with it free of charge and now I think McAfee is better than Norton, but it all depends on the individual person I guess. Try them all if you can and decide for yourself what's best.
Norton and McAfee are two big names and I think they are very good.

However, personally I use Panda. It is strong. You can download a 1 month trial version for free from their site www.pandasoftware.com.
I used Norton first, but still caught some virus, so I use McAffee too. Someone told me that every program has their advantages and won't cover all, so sometimes we need to combine them.

I am amazed that your PC, still is working. Your system will have serious conflict with more then one antivirus program. You can also only have one firewall. If it is Microsoft firewall I recommend that you remove as it is not a true firewall. Microsoft firewall will only protect you from rogue incoming packets, but no protection for your personal data from leaving your PC, without your permission.

You can run four or five antispyware with no conflict. I run five antispyware, being all you will need is the resources. (RAM).

If the ones you want to remove from add/remove and they are still parts of the files in your system here is what you have to do.

Go to your tray, start, run and type in: c://program files, click on browse, click on program files and look to see if the name of the file is there. Delete if possible. If the file says being used by another file, reboot and go back and delete. Usually this will work.

Now go to start search and type in (you will have to type in each file name seperate), because your system will only search for one file at a time. When the system searches for the related file names, delete from top to bottom all related files. If any say being used, or write protected, reboot and go back and perform the same procedure.

Just continue and then invoke the scan on boot in AVAST so your system will be scanned when you reboot your system. It might help or try using other free anti-virus like AVG free edition or bitdefender to check your system for presence of virus or spyware. good luck

as for not deleting.... you can always go manual.

If you know where the file is, delete it. It won't go away though. To delete it, cut it and paste to your desktop. Then cut and paste into the recycle bin and empty recycle bin. it will appear to be gone. but it is still there. make a file with same name and extension as the old file. then copy and paste to desktop, this will erase the malicious data left by the virus. This may work... it may not. This did work for me though. I had some w7.bloohound virus or something (that is what norton called it.) and it could not be deleted by norton antivirus. So i killed it myself. that is the second virus that I got rid of by myself. And my computer has been fine for over 6 months now. so hopefully it will work for you.

I dont use any antivirus because I think.. Like Norton? Is a big ripoff, whenever I get malware or a virus that highjacks the browser or takes over your computer I just delete everything and reinstall windows. It makes the computer like brand new. Of course though make sure you burn whatever you want to save onto a cd before you delete, its fun to delete everything too, windows wont let you delete everything cause it needs some things to keep running.

I currently use Ad-Aware SE Professional and Norton Internet Security 2006. They both help an aweful lot but with the current sophistication in adware/spyware it is very difficult to maintain a clean computer. Ive gotten my share of wares and viruses that shut down Anti Virus programs and wreak havoc. Best bet is to maintain a healthy backup of your system, often.
