I have used both, and also Norton. I feel AVG is the best. Yes, you do need to uninstall McAfee first. AVG's instructions will tell you all you need to know.

McAfee and AVG are both JUNK. I recommend antivir free edition. It is the best.

There are viruses that have been reverse engineered to get around McAfee and Norton.

AVG Free Edition is free for home use and more thorough and accurate.

It doesn't effect much from switching form antivirus to another since all the antivirus are made to detect viruses. There is little bit difference in antiviruses software.

The problem arises when system hogs since some antivirus like Norton , Mcafee use more memory and slows down our PC

New viruses that come across are not deductable because there virus def or not yet prepared to stop them. But they can be dedcuted as malicious thing which u can check and if u feel something is wrong u cud deny it.
