Firewalls stop attacks. If you connect to the internet by DSL Modem you have built in hardware firewall already, and that will stop most attacts.

Windows comes with a very good software Firewall.

For Virus protection I use AVG Free

For Spyware I use AD-Aware 2007 AND Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5

The most common attacks today are NOT virus's they are SPYWARE.
