Norton and macafee are both resource hogs. Go to www.grisoft.com and get AVG. They have a free one and a paid one.
i use AVG also....my computer guy recommended it and it's free (they also have premium versions). just go to their sit and download it.

www.avgfree.com ........i believe.
I use AVG because its free, and it keeps my computer clean, so I would recommend that.
AVG is the best...

other free ones are Panda and Avast...
Norton is a good one if you want to buy it or PC Tools anitvirus, but if you do not want to pay AVG is a great one and finds some that even Norton won't.
I'd have to say Trend Micro PC-Cillin.
mc afee is the best go to mcafee.com
http://toptenreviews.com/ everybody has there own opinion on what is the best. but this site tests different software and chooses the best based on same criteria.
AVG
What is rated 1-2-3-4-5, is not always the best buy for your money. I use an antivirus/spyware that you don't see or hear that much about. An it is not rated.
