PCWorld says that BitDefender 9.0 is the best to buy. For the freeware antivirus, I use AVG. The links below show how PCWorld has compared all of the major antivirus programs. The latest versions of McAfee and Norton are memory hogs and eat up resources.

Norton Anti Virus - Internet security.

It does its job perfectly, i would give it an 4 on a scale from 1 to 5. A four because norton is somewhat a heavy application compared to the "other anti-virus" applications. Heavy as in start up takes a few sec to fully load it in the memory to protect your system at the startup of your OS.
I really like and use E-set Nod 32. It is not free, but i'll tell you what, it sure does a good job.
