When u install an anti virus software, it resides in the primary memory(RAM). So the RAM space gets reduced %26 hence the system slows down.
Just imagine u build a divider too wide on a road, obviously the road width decreases %26 the traffic moves slowly than before. Same is the case here.
Why does using anti virus software slowdown the system?norton 360
If you dont wanna your system full with viruses, trojan and worm and another thing and if you dont wanna lose your documents than you have to use anti virus.
Decreasing speed at your machine is normal, but not that significant, it only need memory about 20M,except for Kaspersky, about 40M (on PC that I use right now).

Anti-virus programs keep monitoring for viruses in the background. Thus, they squeeze some part of RAM (Random Access Memory). Therefore, they slow down the PC.But this also a fact that more strong the monitoring of anti-virus software, more secure it is.Norton has the best protection and it also makes the system slower,in fact a little more slower than it's rival anti-virus software packages because it has more security than the other ones.So you will have to compromise for security in terms of speed.
Using antivirus software shouldn't slow down your computer that much... Well that is unless it's finding all sorts of viruses or is just scanning constantly. If you use Symantec Antivirus, you can make adjustments to the settings so less resources are devoted to the antivirus processes.
You may want to invest in additional memory to offset the resources used up by the antivirus.
Good luck to you!
constant scanning
