Did you shut it down before you tried to uninstall it? You may need to reinstall it to allow you to uninstall it.

You might not have properly installed AVG. Try uninstalling or repairing from the set up file (the file that you downloaded from the internet). If this doesn't work, download AVG again, make sure that you install it properly (it will automatically override the previous one that you have got) and then uninstall it from Add / Remove Programs.
