Yes, it is Microsoft's anti-spyware program

I would download a better antispyware program

Free Anti-Spyware http://pcsafety.info

- Spyware Doctor Starter Edition (The Best)

- Adaware 2007

- AVG Antispyware

- Spyware Terminator 2

- Spybot Search and Destroy

- SuperAntispyware

Yes. AVG free AV doesn't protect you against spyware, see here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/

Windows Defender is OK but there are better. One thing Defender does is offer some protection in real-time mode. If you also install e.g. Spybot S%26D or AVG Anti-Spyware, turn off the real-time function (e.g. Teatimer in Spybot) or there's a good chance of a clash between the two anti-spyware programs.
ya, it will jsut give you another layer of security... always good in todays world
