Typically you can't get rid of a virus without Anti-Virus software.

If it's a boot sector virus you will need to either buy or download Anti-Virus software. Personally, I like the Norton System Works/Norton Firewall combination, but the Norton Anti-Virus is good if that's all you want or you can try one of those that the others have provided. I can't speak for the other Anti-Virus software, but I have had at least one personal computer since 1984 and now I have 8 at home and I have never gotten a virus and I do quite a bit of downloading.
