my new laptop had norton but it was just trial and its getting ready to expire. and i know that nortons not the greatest but what is better?

You know I think the best and which happens to be the cheapest is, Avast.com.

It has p2p(download music site) protection, e-mail, and chat room. its Free for home version yet the Professional is still pretty cheap for an antivirus software you can rely on. I have installed avast on many of my friends computers and it has been able to block, stop, and delete thousands of viruses, trojans, and spyware. It alerts you right way, and you can delete it from your computer. You will have to defrag your computer once every three months to insure best proformance.

Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite. It has a firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware in one suite I've been using Zone Alarm for years. I've had no viruses and very little spyware (Ad-Aware and Spybot Search %26 Destroy are part of my security). Zone Alarm is easy to use and can be configured to update and do scans automatically.
AVG - Free or Paid subscription
You are paying for Internet service, why don't you check out your provider, they should have one and it should be free to you. My Internet provides a very good one, and I don't need any thing else. They upgrade, and if something is trying to hack into my computer it is automatically blocked. If it is serious then the Internet connection is disabled. Until the danger is over or quarantined. I second the AVG but be sure to download the spyware protection while you are there.
My dell came with McAfee and I haven't seen the slightest hint of a virus. It's good software and has an easy user interface. I highly recommend it.
