Is the AVG anti-virus program just as good as Norton?

Using a virus product and not getting a virus does not say much about whether it is as good as any other. It is rather difficult prove a negative empirically.

The only way to answer this question is to compare both AVG and Norton on the same machine against all possible viruses. Obviously, this would require a lab environment.

In general, every virus program will miss something another program will catch. AVG is no different in this respect. As mentioned in other responses, it is not bundled with other security products -- so compare only to Norton Antivirus in this case -- but is a reliable virus scanner.

Just remember regular updates and don't count on 24/7 support.

I think AVG is as good or better then Norton. Norton has been getting slower and buggier with every edition.

AVG is more trouble free, does just as good a job %26 is free.

If you want the best get Trend Micro.
Not exactly. Doesn't have tech support or other features. But does have constant updating and does do virus protection. It's free, and for free you can't get better.
I've been using the free version of AVG and I haven't had a single virus, granted you still have to be careful and not download tons of crap. I also run Adaware and Spybot regularly. I find that AVG has certainly kept me protected.
Consumer Search has reviews of anti-virus programs.
