I have noticed by researching software on the computer that most of them say "licensed for 1 year" etc. I am also considering purchasing it on eBay. Opinions on both please.

when its licensed for 1 year, you get 1 year of free updates and once it expires, you buy a new version or pay for another year or so. if you buy it on ebay, get it new because if it was used the license key might be missing

No, you must "renew" your "subscription" so the software can get the newest virus definition files every few days. That's why if you think about it, all the paid-for antivirus will let a few viruses get to your computer so you get scared and keep paying them for your subscription.
That goes for all of the most famous ones, like McAfee, Norton, Panda...
The best solution, in my opinion is to use a free antivirus that has passed the independent VB 100% rating,
